Item No. 18
memorandum
TO: City Council
John Godwin, City Manager
FROM: Bob Hundley, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: SURVEILLANCE CAMERA PROJECT
DATE: August 11 t", 2016
BACKGROUND: In budget presentations, the police department proposed a 24 camera
surveillance system for the city. These cameras were to be placed in public areas around the
community to assist in the investigation of criminal acts. Council requested to bring back an
initial cost of the system with fewer cameras primarily for the downtown area with the ability to
grow the system in phases.
STATUS OF ISSUE: We have received an estimated cost for the installation of the
infrastructure and six cameras from one vendor in the amount of $49,800.00. The server and
initial infrastructure at the police department could handle up to 32 cameras. The cost for adding
additional cameras to the system would be dependent on the locations selected. The system
operates on `point to point' connectivity. Any camera placement that could not link to the initial
`broadcaster' would require another connective point. The connecting point equipment is $6000
for each site along with the cost of the additional cameras at $1200 each. The initial system
comes with a 5 -year maintenance contract.
BUDGET: The impact to the budget would be an additional cost of $49,800
RECOMMENDATION: Presentation and provide direction to staff.
