Item No. 22
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: CITY CLEANUP
DATE: August 15, 2016
BACKGROUND: Keep Paris Beautiful hosts an annual cleanup day, which goes a long way to
helping remove litter from many of our most traveled roadways. KPB typically does not have
the resources to take on lots of additional projects, however.
STATUS OF ISSUE: One recurring issue in Paris is yard debris that never gets cleaned up.
This is caused by a number of factors, but a single annual cleanup day whereby residential
property owners can place tree limbs and clippings out on their curbs and have them removed at
no cost, could be a way to improve local neighborhoods. It may be necessary to organize local
non - profit and faith based organizations to help those residents who are physically unable to take
materials to the curb. We would need to proceed carefully too —some residents pay for such
collections and might resent free collections for neighbors. We also cannot know what to expect
in regards to volume, and do not want city crews and equipment to become overwhelmed. Even
so, an annual cleanup could be a positive community event.
BUDGET: NA.
RECOMMENDATION: Provide direction to staff.
