Item No. 18
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: DRAINAGE UPDATE
DATE: October 14, 2016
BACKGROUND: The council authorized $1.8 million for drainage repair, maintenance, and
construction, and to date we have expended about half of that total amount on materials,
equipment, spraying, and contractors. The council also recently approved hiring an engineering
firm to study the drainage in the 24t" SE basin (starting around Cherry north of Wade Park)
preparatory to drainage design and construction of past -due improvements in 2017. We recently
cut back on the number of contract crews in the field to get as much work as possible completed,
yet still have enough funds left for that construction work. Clearing and grubbing will taper off
by the end of November; future work will be done in- house, utilizing the CIP crew whenever it is
available.
STATUS OF ISSUE: Public Works Director Jerry McDaniel and City Engineer Carla Easton
will present a brief update to the council on October 24, highlighting what has been completed
and where we will be working in the next several weeks.
BUDGET: Up to $1.8 million authorized.
RECOMMENDATION: Discussion only.
