Item No. 19
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: FUNDING FOR OPTIMIST CLUB
DATE: December 20, 2016
BACKGROUND: For the last three budget cycles, the local Optimist Club has requested grant
support for its youth baseball program. Club membership is down from what it once was, and
remaining members are having a more difficult time making ends meet financially. This is a
very important program to our local youth, and one that could be very expensive if the city ever
had to take it over.
STATUS OF ISSUE: Last summer, the council was scheduled to receive a presentation and
request from the club, but due to a personnel change and miscommunication on their part, no one
from the Optimists appeared, so no funding was set aside. A representative of the club has since
asked the council to again consider funding, and I said at the time we would revisit it in January.
I hate to see them penalized over a miscommunication, but now that the year is partially gone, I
think a partial year funding would be appropriate middle ground.
BUDGET: This is an unfunded item.
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize creation and execution of an agreement with the Optimist
Club providing $2,000 to support the baseball program in 2017.
