531

2000-2001
Paris Economic PROGRAM OF WORK
· Development Corporation

Executive Summary

the Paris Economic Development Corporation looks at a program of work
beginning this new millennium it would benefit us to reflect back over the last couple of
decades to realize the changes in economic development.
During the 1990's only 15 states have shown any kind of increase in
manufacturing employment. Yet the amount of production has shown significant gains.
Automation and technology have allowed us to produce more with fewer and fewer
people. There could be no greater evidence of that than right here in our own Campbell's
Soup facility. Although Campbell's has been able to maintain a strong labor force with
the additions in Prego Sauce and the Pace Picante' Sauce, they produce significantly
more with less.
There has been so much advancement in the last two decades in our computing
-- ability. The personal computer on my desk has more capability than the building full of
computers that NASA used when it launched its first manned spacecraft. This
information age we live in today and the technology we possess is magnifying what we
can do in the workplace. When AT&T invented the cellular phone in 1985, the CEO of
AT&T was asked in a press conference what he thought the impact of cell phones would
be in the year 2000. AT&T's Chief Executive said he would not be surprised if there
were 900,000 cell phones use by the year 2000. Today there are 900,000 new cell phones
connected every three days.
Competition and deregulation have had a major impact in our business world.
Just look at the airline industry and the telephone business. With the impending
deregulation of the electric industry we can only guess what the future holds for that
industry. One thing we can be sure of is that as we embark into this new frontier of
electric deregulation, things will be changing faster than we can imagine.
