Item No. 15
memorandum
TO: City Council
John Godwin, City Manager
FROM: Bob Hundley, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: ANIMAL CONTROL ORDINANCE AMENDMENT - FEES
DATE: February 13, 2017
BACKGROUND: The Lamar County Humane Society has requested help in recouping some of
the cost of vaccinating dogs which enter the shelter when that animal is reclaimed by the owner.
STATUS OF ISSUE: The city recently changed the animal control ordinance to allow LCHA
the ability to vaccinate all dogs entering the shelter for `kennel cough'. These vaccinations will
help the ultimate goal of reuniting a healthy dog to the owner or a new adoptive owner. LCHA
has indicated that the vaccinations cost $10 each and would like the city to add that to the
reclaim fee for the animal owner to pay. This will not impact any fees as set by LCHA in their
adoption process, only reclaimed animals.
BUDGET: There is no adverse impact to the budget. The city will need to refund these fees to
the LCHA quarterly for animals reclaimed by their owner.
RECOMMENDATION: Amend ordinance Section 5 -3 Animal Control (b)2 Fees as requested.
