Lamar County Multi- jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan <br />Executive Summary <br />EXECUTIVE SUMMARY <br />Tornadoes, floods, severe winter storms and drought top the list of Lamar County, Texas' most <br />disastrous events over the past 100 years or so. Natural disasters are cataclysmic events that can <br />have a direct or indirect impact on the public's health and well- being, according to the United States <br />Department of Health and Human Services. Although these natural events cannot be prevented and <br />the likelihood of each of these events striking our area again are significant, steps can be taken to <br />reduce their impact upon life and property in Lamar County. <br />The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) defines hazard mitigation as "an action <br />intended to reduce repetitive losses from future natural disasters ". <br />The objectives of the Lamar County Multi- jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan are: 1) To prevent <br />future losses of lives and damage to property due to natural disasters; 2) To enable mitigation <br />measures to be implemented during immediate recovery from a disaster; and 3) To seek funding <br />for identified areas in Lamar County that will benefit from mitigation measures. <br />The Lamar County Multi - jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan has been prepared in cooperation <br />with incorporated and unincorporated jurisdictions, business and industry, education, health care <br />entities, nonprofits, and the citizens of Lamar County, Texas. <br />The planning process, background information, benefits of Hazard Mitigation planning, hazard and <br />risk assessment, mitigation strategies and their implementation, plan maintenance are included in <br />the Lamar County Multi- jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. <br />
