Lamar County Multi- Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan
Chapter Three
Damage can also be caused by flying debris (referred to as windborne missiles). If wind speeds
are high enough, missiles can be thrown at a building with enough force to penetrate widows,
walls, or the roof. For example, an object such as a 2" X 4" wood stud weighing 15 pounds,
when carried by a 250 -mph wind, can have a horizontal speed of 100 mph and enough force to
penetrate most common building materials used in houses today. Even a reinforced masonry
wall will bew penetrated unless it has been designed and constructed to resist debris impact
during extreme winds. Because missiles can severely damage and even penetrate walls and
roofs, they threaten not only buildings but the occupants as well.
With thunderstorms also comes lightning. Each second there are 50 to 100 cloud to ground
lightning strikes across the U.S. These strikes can kill humans and animals, disrupt utilities, and
start wildfires.
4. Previous Occurrences
Since 2006, the Naitonal Climatic Data Center (NCDC) Recorded 27 thunderstorm and high
wind events and 2 reported cases of lightning damage in Lamar County. Due to the rural nature
of the County, most reports of thunderstorms and any associated damage are from cities and
towns.
Table 4a: Thunderstorms 2006 -2011
Location c
County
Paris
003/29/2007
Thunderstorm
Wind Speeds
(kts)
50kts
Property
Damages (per
thousand)
15.00K
Tigertown
04/24/2007
Thunderstorm
56 kts
5.00K
Roxton
04/24/2007
Thunderstorm
50kts
1.00K
Paris
06/20/2007
Thunderstorm
56kts
30.00K
Novice
04/03/2008
Thunderstorm
56kts
5.00K
Paris
04/03/2008
Thunderstorm
50kts
0
Paris
04/10/2008
Thunderstorm
50
0
Tigertown
05/06/2009
Thunderstorm
52
2.00
Paris Flying
Tiger Airport
05/06/2009
Thunderstorm
56
125.00
Paris Cox Field
05/9/2009
Thunderstorm
58
15.00
Paris
05/09/2009
Thunderstorm
50
0.25
105
