Lamar County Multi - Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan <br />Chapter Three <br />suppression. High values of the KBDI are an indication that conditions are favorable for the <br />occurrence and spread of wildfires, but drought is not by itself a prerequisite for wildfires. Other <br />weather factors, such as wind, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric stability, play a <br />major role in determining the actual fire danger. <br />7. Secondary Hazards <br />Diminished air quality is a secondary hazard of wildfires. The smoke plumes from wildfire fires <br />can contain potentially carcinogenic matter. Figure 7 shows how the plumes can impact <br />neighboring areas. Fine particles of invisible soot and ash that are too small for the respiratory <br />system to filter can cause immediate and possibly long term effects. <br />Source: NOAA <br />122 <br />
