Lamar County Multi- Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan <br />HAZARD PROFILE: SECTION ELEVEN - EXPANSIVE SOILS <br />1. Description <br />Chapter Three <br />Expansive soils are soils with a relatively high Expansive Soils - Soils that tend to swell or <br />percentage of clay minerals that are subject to shrink based on moisture. <br />changes in volume as they swell and shrink with <br />changing moisture conditions. As the soils swell pressure is exerted on structures. When the <br />soil dries out the soil shrinks and support for the structure can be displaced. These changes can <br />impact the integrity of structures built on or within the surface of such soils <br />2. Location <br />The entire county is susceptible to high to extremely high soil swelling. The map in Figure 2 <br />shows the abundance of clay in the region and is based upon "Swelling Clays Map of the <br />Continuous United States" by W. Olive, A. Chleborad, C. Frahme, J. Shlocker, R. Schneider and <br />R.
