Lamar County Multi- Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan
Chapter Three
6. Vulnerability
Located in the north eastern part of Texas, Lamar County is in an active part of tornado alley and
has a designated wind speed rating of a Zone IV. Zone IV is associated with 250 mph wind speeds.
Historically the average tornado moves from southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been
known to move in any direction. Consequently, vulnerability of human's and property is difficult to
evaluate since tornadoes form at different strengths, in random locations, and create relatively
narrow paths of destruction. Although tornadoes strike at random, making all buildings vulnerable,
three types of structures are more likely to suffer damage:
• Manufactured homes
• Homes on crawlspaces (more susceptible to lift)
• Buildings with large spans, such as shopping malls, gymnasiums and factories
FIGURE 6a: Wind Speed Rating Zones.
Wind Zones In the United 5019%
1
dr j -.a.
+ ft"We
.1
WIND MWIES 111 Till UNITIO SIATI S'
tMgr w.1i.■w +w.••
a +...r* $r
a
I1
.A, "`10*
too
-w
Mof
