In June of 1980 a high pressure ridge built over the central and souther parts of the US
leaving the areas dry and hot. There were 42 consecutive days of 100+ degrees and records were
broken. In Wichita Falls an all -time high temperature of 117 degrees was recorded. The heat was
blamed for over 1,700 deaths and some reports suggest the heat was the cause for up to 10,000
deaths. It cost an estimated 20 billion dollars in damages.
LO ON or
Lamar County
28 days at or over
and 45 other
07/01/1998
Excessive Heat
32
100 Degrees
counties
Lamar County
26 days at or over
and 45 other
08/1/1999
Excessive Heat
3
100 degrees
counties
Lamar County
Highs over 100
and 45 other
07/1/2000
Excessive Heat
8
from 12th through
counties
the 21St
Lamar County
over
2700
and 45 other
08/01/2000
Excessive Heat
5
100 degrees
1 e
counties
72
