Item No. 17
memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: DRAINAGE PROGRAMMING UPDATE
DATE: July 17, 2017
BACKGROUND: Since completing the engineering investigation of the 25b watershed some
months back, we have again been clearing more channels and creekways, using a combination of
drainage, CIP, and contract crews, and working off a map of previously flooded areas. Areas
addressed include the large channel north of the loop beside Orr Honda (which flooded twice
with significant property damage), 20th NW near Potters, Washington & 7d' SE, and 23rd NW.
We also just started work on the channel on the east side of Collegiate near Clarksville, where
we will shape and clean the earthen ditch, as well as reduce the height and mass of the concrete
velocity dissipaters in hopes water to the north will empty faster. Planned projects include W.
Center, S. Church, Pine Bluff, York, and Brownwood Circle. Of course we have numerous spot
repairs to address too, including 20th NE at Cherry, 36th NE, 15th NW, 3rd SW, etc.
STATUS OF ISSUE: Moving forward, in addition to this update, Ms. Drake has requested that
we develop a plan that can be distributed via the city's website to keep citizens apprised on
progress and planned work locations. Work will not be continuous, especially during summer
months, due to the size of our crews and competing workloads. Our extra drainage appropriation
will be used up soon as well, so contract work will no longer be available. However, the website
information, which will include the attached status map, should still be helpful.
BUDGET: Funding will come from previously appropriated drainage funds.
RECOMMENDATION: Discussion only.
