Item Nos. 20 & 21 memorandum TO: Mayor & City Council FROM: John Godwin, City Manager SUBJECT: 2017 -18 BUDGET DATE: August 17, 2017 BACKGROUND: I previously presented a balanced budget to you that includes some new equipment, two new employees (Codes and Drainage) beginning in mid -year, continued capital maintenance in Utilities, debt payments on the new utilities and street bonds, continued costs associated with the new northwest EMS station, and increased costs for various pay increases. A 5 cent increase is recommended in the current tax rate ($0.50195 per $100 of valuation); no increases are planned for water or sewer rates. STATUS OF ISSUE: Should the council wish to make any changes to the recommended budget, those need to be completed fairly quickly. Our first public hearing will be at a special council meeting conducted on Tuesday, September 5; the second one on September 11. The budget is scheduled to be adopted at another special meeting on Monday, September 18. BUDGET: NA at this time. RECOMMENDATION: Call for public hearings on the budget and tax rates on September 5 and 11, and provide any additional direction and clarification to staff needed.
