Item No. 14 <br />TO: Mayor & City Council <br />John Godwin, City Manager <br />FROM: Janice Ellis, City Clerk <br />SUBJECT: SPECIAL ELECTION CANVASSING OF RETURNS <br />DATE: November 8, 2017 <br />BACKGROUND: On July 24, 2017 by ordinance number 20'17-028, City Council ordered a <br />special election for the purpose of voters to consider one proposition, <br />STATUS OF ISSUE: On November 7, 2017, the voters of the City of Paris, voted on Proposition <br />A for the abolition of a sales and use tax for the promotion and development of new and <br />expanded business enterprises at the rate of one-fourth of one percent within the City of Paris, <br />Texas,, as, permitted and authorized under the Local Government Code, Chapter 501, Type A <br />Corporations, and the adoption of a local sales and use tax in the City of Paris, Texas at the rate <br />of one-fourth of one percent to provide for maintenance and repair of municipal streets. The <br />proposition failed, with 420 votes cast for the proposition and 1,150 votes cast against the <br />proposition. <br />BUDGET: There is no impact on the budget. <br />RECOMMENDATION: Approve the resolution canvassing the returns for the Special Election <br />as required by State Law. <br />
