With the <br />assistance of government officials,, the merchants <br />were granted their request, Camp Maxey, <br />located north of Paris, was established in 1942. <br />The influx of soldiers and their families helped <br />elevate Paris out of the lingering effects of the <br />Great Depression. By 1945, Camp Maxey was <br />no longer used for training by the Army. Shortly <br />thereafter, it became the training center for the <br />Texas National Guard and still continues for that <br />use today. <br />Throughout the history of Paris, industry has <br />been important to the economy, society, and <br />heritage of the city. In the present day, industry <br />has maintained its importance. Large <br />corporations, including Kimberly-Clark, Sara Lee, <br />and the Campbell Soup Company, have <br />maintained a presence in Paris for decades. <br />These three corporations, along with others, <br />provide employment for many residents of Paris <br />and Lamar County. Paris also serves as the <br />location for utility and tech nolog ica I industries, <br />For nearly 50 years, preserving the history of <br />Paris has been important to the citizens of this <br />unique and culturally rich city. The Lamar County <br />H!istoricall Commission began in 1963 under the <br />name Lamar County Historical Survey <br />Committee. The County Historical Commission <br />influenced development by focusing on becoming <br />a tourist destination based on history. <br />The Paris Downtown Development Association <br />(1966) and the Architectural Preservation <br />Committee (1979) were formed to provide <br />support and guidance to the revitalization of the <br />downtown business district. The Landmark <br />Preservation Committee was established in 1980 <br />to help retain the historic personality of significant <br />properties in the city. The Committee was <br />renamed the Paris Historic Preservation <br />Commission in 2002. <br />Paris became a Texas Mainstreet City in 1984 <br />and again recertified in; 19918.
