Each period <br />of construction brought different <br />architectural styles, details, and <br />materials. <br />The first period of development began in <br />1845 with the establishment of Paris and <br />ended with the fire of 1877. The first <br />buildings built in Paris were structures <br />made of hand hewn, wood and wood <br />siding. These early buildings were <br />constructed around the central plaza. <br />During this time, the county courthouse, <br />built in 1846, was, located in the center of <br />the plaza. The courthouse was relocated <br />two blocks north of the square in 1874 <br />when the needs of the citizens outgrew <br />the building. The plaza was located in <br />the center of the original 50 acres of the <br />townsite. It is the focus of the grid <br />pattern street system located around it. <br />By the 1860s, buildings were constructed <br />in the High Victorian Italianate style. The <br />emergence of the style took place <br />because of the cotton boom and the <br />subsequent arrival of the railroad. <br />Presently, no buildings from this period <br />survive because of the devastation from <br />the fire of 1877, which destroyed 13 <br />acres of the commercial district. <br />The second period of development <br />began immediately folllowingl the fire of <br />1877 and ended in 1916. Because of the <br />devastation of the fire of 1877, new city <br />code required that all commercial <br />buildings be constructed of brick. By <br />1877, the railroad had already impacted <br />the Paris economy.
