<br />RESOLUTION NO. 88-134 <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Paris, Paris, <br />Texas, at the request of the East Texas-Gulf Highway <br />Association, does hereby voice its support for the improve- <br />ment of U.S. Highway 271, the "Green Carpet Route"; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the "Green Carpet Route" is a vital link in <br />the transportation system carrying traffic from the Indian <br />Nation Turnpike in Oklahoma through Paris and Lamar County <br />to the Houston area; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Texas State Highway Commission has <br />recognized the need for improvements to this route and has <br />wisely and generously provided for said improvements; and, <br /> <br />whereas, three priority projects remain to complete the <br />"Green Carpet Route": Upgrading to four lanes the three <br />miles from Mt. Pleasant to the Franklin County line; up- <br />grading to four lanes the forty-seven miles from the <br />Franklin County line to Paris; and re-signing the route to a <br />single route designation; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, upgrading the last fifty miles of the "Green <br />Carpet Route" from its present status to that of four lanes, <br />preferable divided highway, together with necessary re-align- <br />ments, structures, and other adjustments to assure a first <br />class highway facility beneficial to the communities served <br />and the general motoring public, both intrastate and <br />interstate; NOW, THEREFORE, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />PARIS, That the State Highway Commission, be, and it is <br />hereby requested to fund and construct the above described <br />three priority projects remaining to complete the "Green <br />Carpet Route"; and, <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City of Paris pledges <br />its cooperation and support for the completion of the "Green <br />Carpet Route"; and, <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City Clerk of the City <br />of Paris, Mattie Cunningham, be, and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to send certified copies of this <br />Resolution to Mr. Raymond E. Stotzer, Jr., Engineer/- <br />Director, State Department of Highways and Public Transpor- <br />tation, 11th & Brazos, Austin, Texas 78701-2483, Mr. Bobby <br />Myers, State Highway District Engineer, P. O.
