Item No. 15 TO: Mayor, Mayor Pro -Tem & City Council Grayson Path, City Manager FROM: Richard Salter, Chief of Police SUBJECT: MVPCA GRANT APPLICATION FOR FY 2021-2022 DATE: June 28, 2021 BACKGROUND: The City of Paris began the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force with the assistance of the Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Authority in September 1994. Since that time, the City of Paris Police Department application has been approved for 27 consecutive years. ABPTA changed their name in 2019 to the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority. There are two Paris Police detectives assigned to the Task Force paid for by this grant. These officers are allowed to investigate auto thefts and burglaries in a number of counties in the Northeast Texas area. STATUS OF ISSUE: The MVPCA is taking applications for grants for the next fiscal year. The total amount for the grant for 2021-2022 is $190,806.00 including a cash match of $39,752.00 from the city. We ask for Council to approve the application for the grant and authorize the manager to complete certain documents. The MVPCA requires a resolution from the governing body for the grant application BUDGET: The grant application will require a $39,752.00 cash match in the 2021-2022 police department budget. RECOMMENDATION: Motion to approve a resolution authorizing the application of the grant to the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority for the continuation of the Northeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force and authorizing the City Manager to execute all necessary documents.
