Appointment of Benny Plata to fill the City Council Vacancy in District 3

RESOLUTION NO. 2020-013 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, TEXAS; APPOINTING BENNY PLATA TO FILL THE CITY COUNCIL VACANCY IN DISTRICT 3 AND TO SERVE AS COUNCIL PERSON FOR DISTRICT 3 UNTIL MAY 2,2020; MAKING OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS RELATED TO THE SUBJECT; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on January 10, 2020, Council Member Billy Trenado resigned from his Council Seat in District 3 due to illness; and, WHEREAS, there now exists a vacancy on the membership of the City Council of the City of Paris in District No. 3, and it is appropriate that a successor be appointed; and, WHEREAS, Mr. Trenado's term was due to expire on May 10, 2020; and WHEREAS, Benny Plata was the sole candidate to file for said office; and WHEREAS, on February 19, 2020, the City Clerk filed her Certificate of Election and the City Council declared Benny Plata as an unopposed candidate for District 3 by Ordinance No. 2020-008; and WHEREAS, the City Council finds that it is in the best interest of the people of District 3 and of the city as a whole to appoint a successor to Mr. Trenado to serve out his unexpired term ending on May 2, 2020; and WHEREAS, Mr. Plata has been declared the unopposed candidate in the election to succeed Mr. Trenado as Council Member from District 3; and WHEREAS, therefore, Mr. Plata is the logical person to fill Mr. Trenado's unexpired term; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, TEXAS, THAT: Section 1. The findings set out in the preamble to this resolution are hereby in all things approved. Section 2. That Benny Plata be, and he is hereby, appointed as Council Member for District 3, and as such is a member of the City Council of the City of Paris to serve until May 2, 2020. Section 3. This resolution shall be effective immediately upon passage.
