Item No. 18
Memorandum
TO: Mayor, Mayor Pro -Tem, & City Council
City Manager Rose Beverly
FROM: Robert G. Vine, Deputy City Manager
SUBJECT: Dissolution of Traffic Commission
DATE: March 24, 2025
BACKGROUND: On February 8, 1954, the City Council of the City of Paris adopted Resolution
No. 557 which established a Traffic Commission, an advisory commission authorized to consider
all problems relating to traffic or traffic problems of any kind within the City of Paris. Since that
time, the Traffic Commission has met as needed to consider such problems and to recommend
solutions to the City Council.
STATUS OF ISSUE: In recent years, citizen interest in the Traffic Commission has waned and it
has become increasingly difficult to find citizens interested in serving on this Commission. It is
not uncommon for the Commission to cancel meetings for lack of quorum making it difficult to
implement needed traffic improvements.
Staff have not identified any requirement in Texas law which would prohibit the Commission from
being dissolved.
Any future traffic issues will be addressed by utilizing Staff from the Police Department and
Planning and Zoning Department and brought to the members of City Council when appropriate.
BUDGET: This item has no impact on the budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommend passing a resolution to dissolve the Traffic
Commission.
