<br />Special Work Session <br />September 11, 2006 <br />Page 3 <br /> <br />Council Member Ray said that Chief Grooms said they needed nine more firefighters, <br />but would settle for three this year. Mayor Manning said they need to look at hiring three <br />firefighters, because of the safety issue. Council Member Wilson said he wanted to hear <br />from the Fire Chief as to what he will do with three additional firefighters. Chief Grooms <br />said he would distribute them equally among three shifts. <br /> <br />Council Member Ray made a Motion to amend the budget by adding three firefighters <br />and Council Member Freelen seconded the Motion. The Motion carried, 5 ayes - 2 nays, <br />with Council Member Fendley and Council Member Wilson casting the dissenting votes. <br /> <br />Council Member Ray inquired about information for tax exemptions for disabled <br />veterans, disabled persons and citizens over 65 years old. Tony informed Council there were <br />246 disabled eligible persons for tax exemptions. Tony further informed Council that the <br />City was giving a $17,000.00 homestead tax exemption for people over the age of 65 years. <br />He also said that the State requires an exemption for the disabled veterans. <br /> <br />Council Member Ray made a motion to increase the homestead exemption from <br />$17,000.00 to $20,000.00 for persons over the age of 65 and to include a $20,000.00 <br />homestead exemption for disabled persons who were 100% disabled. Council Member <br />Wilson seconded the Motion. Motion carried, 7 ayes - 0 nays. <br /> <br />Council Member Freelen suggested they get the figure for what it is was going to cost <br />to operate the pool cars. Council Member Fendley made a motion to add the operating <br />expenses for the vehicles and Council Member Freelen seconded the Motion. Motion <br />carried, 7 ayes - 0 nays. <br /> <br />4. RESOLUTION NO. 2006-126: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF <br />THE CITY OF PARIS, TEXAS, SETTING A PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED <br />AMENDMENTS TO THE CITY MANAGER'S PROPOSED BUDGET FOR <br />FISCAL YEAR 2006-2007; MAKING OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS <br />RELA TED TO THE SUBJECT; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br /> <br />A Motion to approve this item was made by Council Member Ray and seconded by <br />Council Member Fisher. Motion carried, 7 ayes - 0 nays. <br /> <br />,..- <br />
