<br />EXPLANATION: The amendment would make the Charter consistent with state <br />law in regard to the time that a candidate for city council must make application to <br />be on the ballot (62 days instead of 45 days). <br /> <br />PROPOSITION 52: <br /> <br />Section 96. Council ballots. <br /> <br />The fu.ll names of all candidates for the council as hereinbefore provided,. except such <br />as may have withdrawn, died or become ineligible, shall be printed on the official <br />ballots without party designations. in accordance with the Texas Election Code. <br /> <br />If two eandidates with the same surnames or with Rames so similar as to be likely <br />to eause eORfusioR are Rominated, the addresses of their plaees of resideRees <br />shall be plaeed with their Rames on the ballot. The order of the Rames on the <br />ballot shall be determiRed by lot. The offieial ballots shall be printed not less <br />than 20 days before the date of eleetion. <br /> <br />If two or more candidates have the same surnames. or have names so similar that <br />it is likely to cause confusion. each of those candidates may have printed on the <br />ballot a brief distineuishinl: description or title. not to exceed four words. <br />followin~ the candidate's name. The description or title mav only refer to the <br />candidate's Dlace of residence or present or former profession. occupation. or <br />position. However. the descrintion or title may not refer to a Dublic office. The <br />order of the names on the ballot. the form of the ballot. and the deadline for <br />havin~ the ballots printed shall be accomplished in compliance with state law. <br /> <br />EXPLANATION; The amendment would eliminate the requirement that <br />candidates' full names be used on the ballot, instead allowing the use of given <br />names and initials and/or nicknames, and also provide for additional description <br />when two or more candidates have names so similar that confusion could result. <br /> <br />PROPOSITION 53: <br /> <br />Section 97, Election of councilmen by majority. <br /> <br />A.t the regular munieipal election (or any special election held to fill yacaneies on <br />the city council) the caRdidates for the office of councilman, to the Rumber to be <br /> <br />29 <br />
