City Engineer Council Date: /Director of Public Works 9-29-2008 RECOMMENDED MOTION: Approve a resolution supporting the safe routes to Schools Master Plan POLICY ISSUE(S): Public hearing BACKGROUND: The Paris Independent School District (PISD) applied for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for a Program and Plan Development grant in 2007. The $10,000.00 grant was awarded to the school district in fall of 2007. The grant money is being used to develop a master plan for the Texas Safe Routes to School Program. PISD, the Friends of the Trail and Hayter Engineering have been creating a master plan. The creation of a master plan for the Texas Safe Routes to School makes our community eligible to apply for a$750,000.00 non-matching grant to construct infrastructure such as sidewalks, cross walks, signs and bike lanes. The City of Paris will need to be the applicant on the grant application because the majority of the infrastructure will be constructed on City of Paris Right-of-Way. A public hearing is part of the development of the Master Plan.
