More kids have tried out for the Tennis Teams in our <br />schools the past 2 years than ever before. Many players enjoy league <br />and tournament play. The PTA strives to provide all this and more <br />for the people of Paris by offering beginner clinics throughout the <br />year for juniors and adults; by having weekly league play year <br />around; and by hosting 3 tournaments per year. ALL OF THIS IS <br />DONE BY VOLUNTEERS. <br /> <br />We strongly feel that the future of the courts at Culbertson Park <br />is in jeopardy. The court surfaces are in a needy state of repair. <br />Even the 3 courts that were resurfaced by the city a little over 4 <br />years ago are chipping and cracking. This is partly due to water that <br />stands after a rain, however some of it is due to the ever increasing <br />vandalism that we are experiencing at the park. The tennis courts are <br />being abused by kids on roller skates, roller blades, bicycles, and <br />skateboards. They play hockey, baseball, football, and they sit <br />straddled on the nets swinging each other until the net collapses. <br />These unauthorized sports and games have really taken their toll on <br />the court surfaces and net posts. The increase of loiterers around the <br />courts has resulted in harassment and aggression toward the players. <br />Some people won't even play at night anymore and certainly don't <br />drop their children off unattended. <br /> <br />The Paris Tennis Association asks that the City of Paris build <br />courts away from any residential areas. We feel a great location <br />would be in the middle of the walking track at Dragon Park between <br />24th SE and Collegiate St. This would be ideal for tournaments <br />hosted by our city schools and would increase the safety factor for <br />people who enjoy the walking track. Tennis is a gentlemen's sport <br />not associated with yelling and screaming and poses no threat to the <br />tranquility of the walking track. <br />
