with imminent preservation of the Central Fire Station. A grant has been obtained
to redesign and landscape the streets and walks in the Plaza area and this is a
project-in-work at this writing. The City has been more than a willing partner in all
of these restorations. The recent renovations of the historic peristyle in Bywaters
Park is an example. The Culbertson Fountain has been renovated and the area
landscaped. A marker to the memory of J.J. Culbertson was placed on the Plaza
and dedicated by the Lamar County Historical Commission.

A THC marker was erected at the Shady Grove Cemetery. A THC marker has been
applied for Cox Field, a 1943 military airport now the city airport.

Threatened with demolition is the 1888 Early House which is deteriorating.
Estimates for removal and restoration exceed $ 250000 and there are no prospects
for survival. The Gibraltar Hotel is also listed as an endangered structure with no
prospects at this time.

~d~~Hl~~

Chairman
Lamar County Historical Commission
President Lamar County Historical Society
May 1, 2004

J
