5. Source Defect Location
All defects located (cracked manhole walls, broken pipe seals, leaking
frame seals, etc.) were recorded
on field inspection forms. To the
left, in Figure III-2, is a
photograph of a broken frame.
Photographs like this one, and the
one below, were taken of all
defects observed and are included
with the field inspection data in
Appendix F.
Figure III-2 - Manhole 02-O100M with
Broken Frame
6. Smoke Testing
Smoke testing of a sanitary collection system is an effective means to detect
sources of inflow and restrictive conditions. Smoke testing was conducted
on approximately 513,660
linear feet of pipeline. During
performance of this task, smoke
was introduced into line
segments and service laterals.
Where smoke escaped, leaks
were recorded with color
photographs, I/I flow rates were
estimated, and sketches were
prepared which referenced each
leak to two permanent markers. Figure III-3 shows smoke exiting through
a mainline defect. The sketches and field notes for each defect are included
in Appendix F. Leak rates assigned to each defect are based on the field
ADS Environmental Services, Inc.
III-6
