VI. TERMS & DEFINITIONS <br />A. Glossary <br />BASE <br />A generic term that refers to the bottom of a manhole. It includes portions of the manhole <br />such as the manhole bench, invert (trough) and bench/wall connection. <br />CATCH BASIN <br />A component of a storm system. Catch basins are normally located in a roadside gutter in <br />order to assist with road drainage. Catch basins are sometimes directly or indirectly <br />connected to the sanitary system and, therefore, can be a source of I/I. <br />CLEANOUT <br />A component of a SERVICE or MAINLINE used to insert a cleaning device. It normally <br />consists of a 4-6 inch steeply sloped vertical pipe that connects a plugged hole at the <br />surface with the collection line. <br />DEFECT <br />A condition in a MAINLINE, SERVICE LINE or MANHOLE such as cracked, broken <br />or corroded pipe, offset joints, cracked manhole walls or maintenance problems such as <br />debris/grease that is evidence of collection system degradation. Defects do not <br />necessarily LEAK. <br />DEPENDENT SYSTEM <br />A SUB-BASIN which receives flow measured by one or more flow monitors. <br />DRAINAGE BASIN <br />A portion of or entire SANITARY COLLECTION SYSTEM consisting of multiple mini- <br />systems or SUB-BASINS. DRAINAGE BASINS are normally defined by a downstream <br />treatment plant, major TRiINK LINE, a creek, or watershed area. <br />ADS Environmental Services, Inc. <br />VI-1 <br />
