DRAFT <br />[H:JANICE ELLIS\CURRENT\PRESERVE AMERICA] <br />July 9, 2004 <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, <br />PARIS, TEXAS, APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING THE FILING OF AN <br />APPLICATION AND ASSOCIATED DOCUMENTATION SEEKING THE <br />DESIGNATION FOR THE CITY OF PARIS AS A PRESERVE AMERICA <br />COMMLTNITY FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2004; AUTHORIZING THE <br />EXECUTION OF ALL DOCUMENTS IN SUPPORT OF SAID <br />APPLICATION; MAKING OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS <br />RELATED TO THE SUBJECT; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, the City of Paris, through the concerted efforts of local government, the <br />business community, the educational community, and citizens at large, by and through that <br />organization known as Keep Paris Beautiful, has diligently sought to markedly improve the <br />appearance and image of the City; and, <br />WHEREAS, as part of said process, the City of Paris has adopted a number of ordinance <br />initiatives, including an Historic Preservation Ordinance to preserve the historical heritage of the <br />community; and, <br />WHEREAS, Preserve American is a White House initiative in cooperation with the <br />Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the U. S. Department of Interior, the U. S. Department <br />of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Housing and <br />Urban Development, the purpose of which is to recognize communities that actively protect and <br />celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development in community <br />revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through <br />education and heritage tourism programs; and, <br />WHEREAS, the City of Paris by and through its grassroots community programs has <br />placed preservation of its historic heritage as a major community-wide priority; and, <br />WHEREAS, in order to receive recognition for such efforts, the City Council of the City <br />of Paris desires to apply to the appropriate officials to designate the City of Paris as a Preserve <br />America Community for calendar year 2004; and, <br />WHEREAS, if the City of Paris receives designation as a Preserve America Community, <br />it will in return receive a number of benefits, including White House recognition; a certificate or <br />recognition; a Preserve America Community road sign; authorization to use the Preserve America <br />
