Ms. Hagood stated that visitors have come in fro England, <br />Norway, The Netherlands, Mississippi, Michigan, and lots of parts of <br />Texas and they always say tell us where your beautiful his oric homes <br />are so that we may see the beauty of this city that dates fro 1844. Ms. <br />Hagood stated that the Commission has the power to recom end to the <br />city the acceptance of this historic district so that it can co tinue to be <br />beautiful and to prosper. <br /> <br />Susy Harper, 545 Johnson Woods, spoke in favor of the peti ion stating <br />that she has been attending all the historic preservation me tings. Ms. <br />Harper states that the commission asks is for cer ificates of <br />appropriateness to be presented. Since last October, 32 ce ificates of <br />appropriateness have been submitted and approved, actuall , none have <br />been denied. Members of the commission have been really elpful and <br />people have taken their advice. <br /> <br />Kelly Wickersham, 574 Church Street, stating that he as there to <br />speak against the misguided attempt to control privat property. <br />Saving our historic landmarks is a noble goal but t rough the <br />implementation of these over bearing regulations that go gainst our <br />basic ideas concerned with private property rights. People re already <br />taking care of these houses without this ordinance being in place. Mr. <br />Wickersham and his family moved out of his home and r stored and <br />repaired the interior. Mr. Wickersham stated that the pr ponents of <br />the ordinance stated that they already have laws pertaini g to zoning <br />and environmental land management, these are well deft ed statues <br />that contain clear objectives pertaining to health and s fety. This <br />ordinance is not clear or objective and is not relevant t health or <br />safety. The ordinance presumes to deny or grant permiss on slips for <br />everything from ordinary maintenance to setting up swi g sets from <br />weekend landscaping projects to hanging a basketball go lover your <br />garage.
