Lamar
County Human Resources also has 4 senior centers that serve a noon time meal and
social activities. Two of those centers are located within the city limits of Paris.
Transportation is also offered to those over the age of 60 to promote independent living.
Describe how your project will benefit the City of Paris and its citizens: Meals on
Wheels enables seniors and disabled individuals to maintain an independent lifestyle. It
also aids in overall nutritional health. Being able to be healthy independent individuals
allows them to stay in their homes longer and be part of their community.

List other sources of funding for this project and the amounts:
Department of Aged and Disabled Services $ 470,888.95
Area Agency on Aging $ 218,578.50
United Way $ 23,523.44
County of Lamar $ 11,000.00

Please note that these numbers are from year end 9/30/10

Previous City Funding:
2006 $ 5,000.00
2007 $ 8,000.00
2008 $ 12,000.00
2009 $ 12,000.00
2010 $ 12,000.00

Detailed Description of Project:
Meals on Wheels is serving an average of 509 meals a day. In 2010 a total of 949
individuals were served by the Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels served a
total of 130,988 meals last year. The 2010 census reports that 24% of the population of
Paris/Lamar County is over the age of 60. Although the overall population of
Paris/Lamar County increased 2.7% from the prior 200 census, the increase of those over
the age of 60 increased 17%. Ranking 4th in the nation, Texas has one of the highest
levels of Senior Hunger. 1 in 8 seniors go to bed hungry each night in the US.

The Meals on Wheels program also has two case managers that work with participants in
the program to refer and assist them in other areas as needed. We strive to train staff and
volunteers in CPR. With this training and having contact with individuals 5 days a week,
we have the ability to assist with emergency needs. We collaborate with law
enforcement and paramedics when there is a concern regarding the welfare of a Senior
Citizen in our community.

1917
