Lamar County Human Resources <br />City Funding Request <br />Summary of Project: Meals on wheels delivers hot nutritious noon time meals to <br />seniors over 60 years of age and disabled individuals in Paris and Lamar County. Lamar <br />County Human Resources also has 4 senior centers that serve a noon time meal and <br />social activities. Two of those centers are located within the city limits of Paris. <br />Transportation is also offered to those over the age of 60 to promote independent living. <br />Describe how your project will benefit the City of Paris and its citizens: Meals on <br />Wheels enables seniors and disabled individuals to maintain an independent lifestyle. It <br />also aids in overall nutritional health. In 2010 a total of 949 <br />individuals were served by the Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels served a <br />total of 130,988 meals last year. The 2010 census reports that 24% of the population of <br />Paris/Lamaz County is over the age of 60. Although the overall population of <br />Paris/Lamar County increased 2.7% from the prior 200 census, the increase of those over <br />the age of 60 increased 17%. Ranking 4th in the nation, Texas has one of the highest <br />levels of Senior Hunger. 1 in 8 seniors go to bed hungry each night in the US. <br />The Meals on Wheels program also has two case managers that work with participants in <br />the program to refer and assist them in other azeas as needed. We strive to train staff and <br />volunteers in CPR. With this training and having contact with individuals 5 days a week, <br />we have the ability to assist with emergency needs. We collaborate with iaw <br />enforcement and paramedics when there is a concern regarding the welfare of a Senior <br />Citizen in our community. <br />
