holidays with a low voltage wet sponge detector in accordance with NACE <br />SP0188. Holidays shall be marked and reworked until no further holidays <br />appear. After all holiday checking is complete, the point of ground <br />connection shall be carefully coated. <br />Each coat shall be s ra ed on in accordance with the manufacturer's <br />recommendations. Rolling interior paint is not permitted. The type of spray <br />nozzle, the fluid pressure at the gun, the distance from the gun to the surface <br />being painted and the speed of travel of the gun shall be as recommended by <br />the manufacturer. Thinning shall be done as recommended. All paint in the <br />fluid pot and lines shall be cleaned out with thinner before application of the <br />paint is begun. The thinner may be used also for cleaning the painting <br />equipment at the end of each day's operations. <br />Each coat shall be dry to touch before the next coat is applied. Follow the <br />manufacturer's directions explicitly. <br />The Contractor is cautioned that small amounts of paint are intoxicating and <br />large amounts tend to be toxic. The Contractor shall make provisions to keep <br />the tank well ventilated during the spraying and drying operation to protect <br />the personnel and to facilitate drying of the coating by solvent evaporation. <br />During the actual spraying operations, all personnel within the tank shall be <br />furnished with either an appropriate respirator or source of external air such <br />as a compressed air line to a sandblasting head mask. At least two (2) men <br />shall be in the tank during spraying operations. <br />C. Exterior Area Surface Preparation & Coating: <br />(1) The work covered by this part of the specifications includes painting the <br />entire exterior surface area of the tank. It also includes painting any <br />steel outside the tank such as vents, hatches, steel retaining rings, <br />exposed yard piping and all other items outside the tank. Data Plates <br />shall NOT be painted over. The Contractor shall furnish all materials <br />required for the painting and shall install them in accordance with the <br />manufacturer's written direction and these specifications. <br />(2) The existing exterior coating system contains rg eater than 1% lead by <br />weight. A laboratory analysis of the coatings is provided at the end of <br />this document in the Appendix. Containment and lead abatement is <br />required during the exterior abrasive blasting operations. See Technical <br />Specification No. 35 - Lead Abatement (TS 35) in this document for <br />containment and lead abatement requirements. Containment must be <br />SW - 8 <br />- 439 <br />
