Presentation by Dr. Debra Cherry on grant funding far Paris and Lamar County. <br />POLICY ISSUE(S): <br />Public Health <br />Dr. Debra Cherry and UT Health Sciences Center Tyler were recently awarded a DSHS Transforming <br />Texas grant for Lamar and Hopkins counties. Transforming Texas is a five-year, federally-funded <br />initiative supporting communities, workplaces, schools and health care providers to reduce chronic <br />disease and lower the cost of care through the power of prevention. Over the next five years, research- <br />based practices and policies, including environmental, programmatic and infrastructure changes, will be <br />implemented in 30 Texas counties to help create healthier communities. This initiative supports <br />interventions aimed at prevention of heart attacks, strokes, cancer and other leading causes of death or <br />disability. The overarching goals of the grant are to: <br />• Reduce death and disability due to tobacco use by 5% <br />• Reduce the rate of obesity through nutrition and physical activity interventions by 5% <br />• Reduce death and disability due to heart disease and stroke by 5% <br />Locally, they are partnering with the Paris-Lamar County Health Department and the Lamar County <br />Coalition of Education, Business and Industry. Dr. Cherry will also working with Earl Erickson and city <br />planners to increase use of the Trail de Paris and support Safe Routes to School. Dr. Cherry has <br />discussed the possibility of this grant funding an update to the City of Paris Parks Master Plan.
