The ISO classification applies to properties with needed "fire
flow" of less than 3,500 gallons per minute (GPM). The classification affects the fire insurance
rating for the vast majority of buildings in the City. Larger buildings with greater fire flows are
individually rated for insurance purposes.
The ISO classification measure for fire service distribution in Paris is based on the percent of the
built-on area of the City which has a first-due engine company within one and one-half (1-1/2)
miles and a ladder-service company within two and one-half (2-1/z) miles. There are other ways
to measure the City's existing and desired distribution of fire service. The National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA) recommends afirst-due company within two (2) miles of
residential areas, within one and one-half (1-'h) miles of commercial areas, and within one (1)
mile of buildings requiring a 5,000 gpm fire flow. Many factors affect decisions about fire
station location. Among them are the fire history of specific areas, the amount of fire protection
provided within buildings (e.g., sprinklers, and detectors), and the density of residential areas.
sAvsxss\weOrinai m[x>n z-oiA>c 30 BWR
