RESOLUTION N0. 2129 <br />WHEREAS, Idovember 15, 1981, marks the 100th anni- <br />versary of the founding of the Federation of Organized <br />Trades and Labor Unions, which evolved into the American <br />Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organi- <br />zations (AFL-CIO), and inaugurated the establishment of <br />the modern American trade union movement; and, <br />WHEREAS, since that tir.le trade unions have played <br />an increasingly effective part in winning for their <br />members the right to decent wages, safe and healthful <br />working conditions, and dignified enjoyment of their <br />leisure time and retirenent years; and, <br />WHEREAS, Arierica's local communities have benefited <br />directly from the activities of AFL-CIO trade unions, <br />both on behalf of their members and in the championing <br />of the rights and progress of all Americans; and, <br />WHEREAS, the trade union movement is an effective <br />and accepted part of our local social and economic fabric, <br />providing for stability and progress through its con- <br />tinuing contributions toward the advancement of job <br />opnortunities to all who wish to work; and, <br />WHEREAS, trade unions are in the forefront of the <br />battles to do away with discrimination, to improve the <br />quality of community life, and to open new opportunities <br />for individual advancement, on behalf of those who often <br />have no other effective champion; and, <br />WHEREAS, we now take for granted many of the accomplish-- <br />ments of AFL-CIO trade unions in the area of decent wages <br />and working conditions, in erecting bars against the ex- <br />ploitation of the weak and defenseless, in providing <br />opportunities for training and education of the unskilled, <br />and in the safeguarding of the community interest against <br />the assault of special interests; and, <br />WHEREAS, the continued existence of strong and effective <br />trade unions among us is a measure of the place they have won <br />in the basic fabric of our society, to be cherished and <br />fostered as a matter of civic pride, NOW, THEREFORE, <br />BE IT RESOLVED, That the City Council of the City of <br />Paris hereby congratulates the AFL-CIO and the Paris <br />Central Labor Council on the century of progress it has <br />achieved, and joins in commemoratin; Labor's Centennial; <br />and, <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution <br />be furnished to the officers of the Paris Central Labor <br />Council. <br />Passed and adopted this 9th day of November, 1981 <br />. <br />AT"'EST: Bill Burnett, Mayor <br />H.
