Mix only as much mortar as may be readily used prior to preliminary
set. No mortar shall be re-tempered.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

A. Prior to commencing work, identify and confirm with Construction Manager the
correction of all sources of water intrusion currently causing brick and mortar
deterioration including: leaking roof or gutters, leaking downspouts, short
downspouts which terminate less than 2'-0" from building, damaged or missing
flashings, differential settlement of the building, rising damp, and negative site
drainage. Failure to correct these causes of masonry deterioration will result in
continued damage to the masonry and wasted effort. Any rework made necessary by
Contractors' failure to confirm correction of all water intrusion prior to commencing
work shall be carried out at contractor's sole expense.

B. Identify which areas of the masonry require repoinfing. Verify these areas with
Architect. Do not repoint more than is necessary.

C. Determine areas which require brick replacement. Areas of missing brick are
indicated on Drawings. Exercise constraint when determining whether or not
damaged bricks require replacement. Limit replacement of damaged brick to those
units which are badly cracked or spelled. Bricks which exhibit minor chips or surface
crocks shall not be replaced.

D. Joint Preparation: Remove old mortar to a minimum depth of 2 I/2 times the width
of the joint to ensure an adequate bond and to prevent mortar "popouts."
