EDITORIAL

United Way campaign

a community success

This year's Lamar County
· United Way drive was simply
iamazing, especially with the
ti~anfortunate events that .happened
during the'last two month~. First
I$.her~,~ Was-,the" Sept6mber '11
~ragedy at the beginning of the
,drive; and later the community's
'largest industrial contributor went
.-on strike. It was understandable
,how those events could make it
difficult to reach the $475,000
campaign goal.
~. Still, the combination of deter-
mined campaign workers to make
their goals and the generosity of a
community to help them succeed
,was enough for Lamar County to
have its most impressive campaign
}_in years. For possibly the first
'time, every division including
· ,Commercial, Government, Indus-

try, Mail Contact, Professional,
Schools and Small Business went
over its target. Most noteworthy
.was Government division, which
reported more than 200 percent
above its goal. The divisions
toge{her raised more than
$520,000 or almost $50,000 more
than the goal. Campaign chairman
Bill Coleman and division chair-
persons should be commended for
their hard work along with those
contributors who helped them
exceed this year's campaign goal.
As many counties around us
struggle to make their United Way
goals, we are reminded that Lamar
County has citizens with big
hearts that give .ia a big way.
There are 19 local United Way
agencies iha~ strongly agree.
