Special City Council Meeting
February 13, 2001
Page 10
Shannon Erickson, 494 CedarCreek Drive, told council thatshe supports the
recreational use for Lake Crook. Ms. Erickson said she has three young
children and they are avid fishermen and enjoy camping and they came to
Paris in hopes of having an area to fish and camp. Ms. Erickson said her
husband is in the medical community and they see a need for revenue to
bring more people into Paris, and as Dr. Wikoff said, there is a large jewel
in the local community that we can serve so many seniors. Ms. Erickerson
said people in big cities are looking for places to come and retire. Ms.
Erickerson said if the City of Paris is not going to pull in another Campbell
Soup or Kimberly-Clark, the city needs to find a way to bring people to Paris.
Ms. Erickerson pointed out that if people retire here, they will not be taking
away from the schools and we will not have to build more schools for them.
She further stated that most of the time the people retiring to an area will
want to give the community volunteer services.
Brad King, Route 1, Box 141, Sumner, Texas, came forward telling the City
Council that he has a list of the incomplete housing developments in and
close to Paris, Texas. He named Willington Point, Oak Creek, Twin Lakes,
Brownwood, ParcOuest, Turtle Creek, Cobbs Farms, Morningside, Beaver
Creek, Doe Run, Hidden Lakes, Movies Eight, and Wood Haven Estates, and
he pointed out that these are incomplete and still have lots available. Mr.
King wanted to know why we would want to build or develop around Lake
Crook. Mr. King stated he would like to see the lake just as a recreational
park.
No one else appeared, and Mayor Pfiester closed the public hearing.
Mr. Terry Brannon came forward again addressing the City Council, telling
them that Denton County has a development district in which the county
actually purchases the land or owns the land and they put the land back into
the development, and the county is actually part of the private-public
partnership. Mr. Brannon said this is different from what some of you have
discussed. Mr. Brannon said the city can be in the partnership and can
profit in the sale of the land. He said in that manner the city can make two
to three times what the city could make from selling the acreage. Mr.
Brannon said if revenue is something that the city needs or wants, that is
one way of doing it. He said one gentleman made a comment that there is
a lot of land around the Paris area that the city could develop, and that is an
important point that he is going to have to consider and he will ask the
Council to consider, because just opening a subdivision on Lake Crook does
