Mayor Dennis Rygaard said that if there was a silver lining for La Marque it
was that the ciry's percentage of subsidy contribution decreased.
Before the talks with ambulance company officials, La Marque paid about 20
percent of the $215,600 subsidy. Now it will pay less than 16 percent of a$509,000
subsidy.
"We're really in a position where we are darned if we do and darned if we
don't," Rygaard said. "I don't think we have another choice."
Subsidies
Under an agreement to be voted on by signatories to an ambulance service
contract with Rural/Metro Corp., share of the subsidy paid to the ambulance company
is expected to increase.
Texas City: From $54,900 to $160,000.
La Marque: From $42,900 to $80,000.
Dickinson: From $42,900 to $85,000.
Hitchcock: From $18,000 to $40,000.
Galveston Counry: From $46,900 to $130,000.
Bayou Vista: $5,000 to $8,000.
Tiki Island: $5,000 to $8,000.
Other terms
• Response time standards will be lowered. The current agreement requires
the company to answer 90 percent of calls within 8 minutes and 59 seconds.
Under the new agreement, 80 percent of calls must be answered in that
length of time. The 80-percent requirement is the industry standard.
• Rural/Metro will be allowed to ask for annual subsidy increases not to
exceed 10 percent in a year. The current agreement limits increases to 5 percent.
3
