Rebecca J. Clifford
Background and Family
I have lived most of my life in Paris. I was born here and attended Paris schools. I met my
husband, Steve, my sophomore year in high school. We both graduated from Paris High
School in 1974. He was salutatorian and I was valedictorian. I spent one year at Paris
Junior College before transferring to Texas Christian University. In December 1977, I
graduated summa cum laude with a BBA in accounting. Upon graduation, I obtained my
license as a certified public accountant, and I joined the Fort Worth office of Price
Waterhouse. I worked in the audit and tax department for one and a half years before
transferring to the Houston office. While in Houston, I was responsible for preparation and
review of tax returns as wells as assisting with Internal Revenue Service audit
representation. When Steve completed medical school and began his residency at Baylor
Hospital in Dallas, I transferred to the Dallas office of Price Waterhouse. As a tax manager in
the Dallas office, I was involved in all areas of tax preparation and planning as well as
assisting the audit department on tax provision reviews for audited financial statements.
Steve completed his radiology residency in June 1985. He decided that he wanted to
practice medicine in Paris, so I quit Price Waterhouse to return to Paris. After returning to
Paris, I continued practicing public accounting and from 1985 to 1990 I had my own CPA
firm. I provided tax and financial accounting services for corporations, partnerships and
individuals. In 1990, I decided that I wanted a more limited practice so that I would have
more time to spend with my family. I closed my office and joined Paul T. Wells CPA on a
part time basis. I am a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Steve and I will have been married 34 years in August. We have four children who also
attended Paris schools. Two were valedictorians, one was salutatorian and one was fifth in
his class. In addition to excelling academically, they also excelled in athletics and the arts.
Two were state ranked swimmers competing at the state 4A level. All were accomplished
saxophone players and drum majors. My oldest, Zachary, holds an undergraduate and a
master's degree in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is
a partial owner of a patent on his master's project. MIT applied for and was granted a
patent on his master's project as of January 1, 2013. He is employed at Google in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. Seth graduated cum laude from Texas Christian University and
is currently attending medical school at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort
Worth. Stephanie graduated from Emory University in Atlanta and is currently attending
Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Ben, a Chancellor's Scholar, is a junior biology major
at Texas Christian University. He is in the honors program and the TCU band and will be
applying to medical school this summer.
Education and community are very important to me. I have been a member, past president
and past treasurer for various school parent teacher organizations and school booster clubs.
I was a founding member and past treasurer of the Lamar County Coalition of Education,
Business and Industry. I am a past president of Paris Association for Gifted Education and a
past member of the Paris Education Foundation. I was a member of the Leadership Lamar
County 1992 class.
C
•
