memoandum
TO: Mayor & Council
FROM: John Godwin, City Manager
SUBJECT: MOSQUITO CONTROL
DATE: April 16, 2013
BACKGROLTND: As you know, the health deparhnent has the lead responsibility for vector
control in the city and county, including mosquito control. Last year was a very bad year for
mosquitoes, and our worst year ever for West Nile. On top of the bad environmental conditions,
the health department went through a transition in which the licensed spray tech retired and was
difficult to replace for a period of time. In order to be better prepared for this coming mosquito
season, Councilmember Drake has asked for a briefing on current plans.
STATUS OF ISSUE: Health Department Director Gina Prestridge will be at the April 22
council meeting to brief the council on her agency's activities. In addition to the health
department's work, the city will stand ready to provide additional support, including repair and
maintenance to the vehicle we provide and to all spray equipment, one of our employees is
testing to become a licensed spray tech (to work for the health department after hours), and we
are already supplying code enforcement and public works employees with chemical dunks, or
doughnuts, to be placed directly into stagnant water as it is identified.
BUDGET: Direct costs will be paid by the health department.
RECOMMENDATION: Discussion only.
..
