Citizen Survey Results
In August of 2013, the City of Paris mailed a survey to a quarter of the households in Paris
regarding the existing park system and the expectations of residents regarding the future park
system. A total of 3,000 surveys were mailed and 296 citizens responded to the survey with
opinions about the existing facilities and the needs for the future of Paris' Park System. The
majority of the respondents (69 %) were between the ages of 18 -64 and thirty -one percent (31 %)
were senior citizens, 65 years of age or older. In addition, the survey was broken down into
different quadrants of the city in order to see how needs differed in the four portions of Paris. A
total of 43% of the survey respondents lived in the northeast region, 32% lived in the southeast
region, 12% lived in the northwest region and 10% lived the southwest region.
The following list is a summary of the key responses regarding the City of Paris' Park System. The
complete survey results can be found in Appendix II.
• Eighty -four percent (84 %) of the respondents expressed that existing parks should be
upgraded and/or improved to include additional facilities.
• Forty-eight percent (48 %) of the respondents expressed that the role of parks, recreation and
open spaces are "more important" today compared to ten years ago in Paris. Twenty -eight
percent (28 %) responded the role of parks was "the same" and only five percent (5 %) stated
that parks were "less important" today compared to ten years ago.
• Seventy -three percent (73 %) of the respondents "strongly agree" or "agree" that parks and
recreation facilities are well worth the cost to taxpayers.
• Sixty -nine percent (69 %) of the respondents expressed that additional parks and recreational
facilities are needed in Paris.
• Sixty -two percent (62 %) of the respondents expressed that residential neighborhoods,
schools and parks should be connected with linear parks such as trails along creeks and
corridors.
• Seventy -six (76 %) of the respondents expressed the Paris park system is fair to good and
seventy -four percent (74 %) rated the maintenance of the existing parks and recreational
facilities fair to good.
PVA,RI
TEXAS
City of Paris Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan 2013 -2023
Page 18
