Swimming Pool - Needs
The City of Paris currently owns one outdoor swimming pool located at the City Pool Park
property and it was constructed in 1997. The existing pool is in fairly good condition but is
frequently in need of repairs and routine maintenance. Since the pool is located outdoors, it is
open from early June to mid August each year. Swimming pools ranked number eleven on the
citizen survey and were discussed in detail at both the focus group meetings and the public input
meeting. The city currently provides a recreational swim team for all ages. This past year,
approximately 50 swimmers participated on the team ranging from ages eight through high school
aged. Recreational swimming is becoming more popular and competitive swimming is a growing
sport in the City of Paris and an indoor swimming pool would provide both competitive and
recreational swimming opportunities for the residents all year - round. The new trend in swimming
pools is a large, multi - purpose aquatic center. An aquatic center facility provides for both
competitive and recreational swimming and
multiple other programs such as: water aerobics,
SCUBA instruction, swim classes, etc. The
construction, maintenance and operation of an
aquatic center is expensive but needs to be
considered in the future. Even with an existing
outdoor swimming pool, the City of Paris needs to
provide additional forms of aquatic recreation for
residents. The construction of a sprayground at an
existing park will provide the residents with an
aquatic based facility in the near term until the construction of an indoor swimming pool is more
financially feasible.
Trails - Needs
Currently, the City of Paris has miles and miles of sidewalks throughout downtown, neighborhoods
and parks. The Trail De Paris is approximately five miles long and runs from 8th Street east to the
Paris city limits where it connects to the Reno Rail Trail. After final completion, the goal of the
Trail De Paris is to be 130 miles long and extend from Farmersville in Collin Country to New
Boston in Bowie County. In 2013, the City of Paris was awarded over $500,000 to construct 2.36
1 City of Paris Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan 2013 -2023
Page 29
