Sherman is a dynamic Texas community of 37 square <br />miles located an hour's drive north of Dallas on US High- <br />way 75 and only a few minutes from the Texas-Oklahoma <br />border. It is the largest city in Grayson County and serves <br />as the commercial and retail hub of its Northeastern <br />Texas/Southeastern Oklahoma region. In addition to its <br />mature and attractive housing stock, a variety of retail, of- <br />fice and industrial land uses offer major employment and <br />commercial activity, Sherman's 1998 estimated census <br />population of 35,000 could approach as high as 37,000 in <br />the current tabulations. The community has maintained consistent growth over the last few dec- <br />ades and is strategically placed to receive a rapidly increasing level of growth pressure from the <br />Dallas and Collin Counties' population boom. <br /> <br /> <br />u <br /> <br />The City of Sherman was originally settled in 1847 and incor- <br />porated in 1858, Sherman's namesake, General Sidney <br />Sherman, is credited with originating the saying "Remember <br />the Alamo" during the Battle of San Jacinto. The rich history <br />of the community is preserved in Olde Town Sherman and the <br />Red River Historical Museum, The C. S. Roberts House in the <br />Olde Town area is maintained by the Sherman Preservation I' <br />League. " I <br /> <br /> <br />Sherman's location provides its residents a "small town" at- <br />mosphere with ready access to all the shopping, cultural and <br />recreational offerings of the DallasIFort Worth Metroplex to <br />supplement the City's local amenities. Cultural and recrea- <br />tional opportunities in the City of Sherman include 425 acres in ten municipal parks and play- <br />grounds, five golf courses (I public), 18 tennis courts (10 public), two museums (I cityoper- <br />ated), community theatre, a senior citizens center, two public swimming pools and a City library <br />with 100,000 volumes available. Lake Texoma, a 97,000 recreational lake rated as the "number <br />one lake in Texas" by the Dallas Morning News, is adjacent to Sherman and offers an abundance <br />of recreational and camping opportunities on its waters and its shorelines that straddle the Texas <br />and Oklahoma border.
