In 1999, HMC established the Michael E, DeBakey Heart Institute of Kansas at <br />Hays Medical Center. In addition to its two cardiovascular laboratories, HMC also offers <br />centers of excellence focused on cancer, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain man- <br />agement, behavioral health, industrial rehabilitation and telemedicine, Additional assets <br />include airplane and helicopter transport and state-of-the-art advanced medical technol- <br />ogy. In early 2002, HMC will open the Center for Health Improvement. <br /> <br />Hays offers its residents a regional shopping mall, a 350-acre park system, a City owned golf <br />course, an airport with passenger service from United Express and US Airways Express and a <br />public library. The University adds to the cultural offerings within the community with lecture, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Wildlife and Outdoors - Two nearby lakes offer out- <br />door recreation and Western Kansas is renowned as a <br />"hunters' haven," <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Hays Aquatic Park - The $4,2 million Hays Aquatic <br />Park was built with sales tax proceeds and serves as a <br />recreational attraction for the entire region. The park, <br />which opened in May 2000, combines a modern <br />Olympic size swimming pool, 2 water slides, a "lazy <br />river" water ride and a zero depth leisure pooL The <br />entryway into the park is the original WP A built bath- <br />house. The City received a historic preservation award <br />for the bathhouse renovation.
