Federal Aviation Regulation Part 77
The construction of tall structures — including buildings, construction cranes, and cell
towers — in the vicinity of an airport can be hazardous to the navigation of airplanes.
The FAA, through FAR Part 77, established a method of identifying surfaces that
should be free from penetration by obstructions in order to maintain sufficient
airspace around airports. FAR Part 77, in effect, identifies the maximum height at
which a structure would be considered an obstacle at any given point around an
airport. The extent of the off-airport coverage needing to be evaluated for tall
structure impacts can extend miles from an airport facility.
Tall structure impacts have historically involved the height of buildings and the
height of cranes used in construction. However, with the influx of radio antennae and,
most recently, towers to support wireless telecommunications and digital television,
the need for careful review of siting such facilities has increased.
