MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
November 18, 1987
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular
session November 18, at 4 p.m. at the Library with Chairman
Bill Hagood presiding. Present were Robert Pierson, Beth Shelton,
Jackie Alsobrook, Jean Gibson, Virginia Gibbs, Rogene Patterson
and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Tiana Williams, Director of Library
Services, Pamela Sidnell, Children's Librarian and Sally Cecil,
President of the Friends of the Library were also present.
Minutes of the October 21 meeting were approved as circulated.
The Budget Report from the City of Paris was distributed and a
Book Circulation Report which Ms. Williams discussed, saying figures
were lower than the previous year because of the disruption in
library services with the completion of the building.
Mr. Hagood complimented the staff for their part in the pre -
dedication evening of November 14 and the November 15 Dedication.
He thanked the Friends of the Library for hosting the gala on
Saturday evening and Mrs. Margaret Nordone was commended for her
leadership.
Ms. Williams introduced Pamela Sidnell, Children's Librarian
who said she had five groups from North Lamar High School November
18 in the Library. She discussed plans for programs for two through
five year olds on Wednesday; story hours, Saturday movies, toys,
bean -bags for seats, a hamster, and contests. She plans a December
10 and 17 wrap -a -gift programs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium
when children of all ages may bring their Christmas gifts with
supplies and have help in wrapping. There will be a Christmas tree
from the Girl Scouts again this year. Also, cushions for story
hours will be coming.
Mrs. Alsobrook reported on the recent meeting with NETLS
which Ms. Williams attended also and the budgets for 1989 -1991
including $1,367,939 for 1989 with $696,698 for books. She spoke
of the growth because of Elizabeth Crabb's enthusiastic help with
smaller libraries. She told of special grants and projects which
libraries are conducting.
Ms. Williams said in January she would have more on policies
and procedures and discuss long range plans for the library. A
great need for streamlining cataloging was needed and thought a
request to Texas Woman's University might bring a summer student
to help.
Mr. Hagood asked about use of the auditorium and members
discussed this with possible use without charge for civic groups,
not social events.
Members discussed the December 5 Christmas Parade with a
float in keeping with "Story Book Christmas" and will ask Roslyn
Sample and Pamela Sidnell to work on this.
