Mr. Ande. on reminded the Board the «uthorization signatures on the
Money Market account need updating. This matter will also be discussed
and acted upon at the August meeting.
Ms. Lewis advised the Display Committee met and reviewed the
guidelines and waiver form for accepting displays for the Library cases.
The difficulty is in organizing and setting up interesting, appropriate
displays but the Committee has a tentative schedule and the first display
should be in place in early April.
The Board was advised Mrs. Alsobrook's expenses from her February 22
trip to Austin to speak before the House Appropriations Committee were
paid by the Texas Library Association. She reported a seeming lack of
enthusiastic support for Library causes while she was there, and urged
everyone to contact their legislators to promote libraries.
The Summer Youth Department schedule was detailed by Ms. Lewis. It
will be a two -part schedule with Summer Activities to include films,
projects, and a pet parade for all area youth to enjoy. The Summer
Reading Club will involve youth grades K -8 and include reading assignments
and drawings for prizes from area merchants.
The Cardholders Status Project will begin officially April 1, Ms.
Lewis announced. Supervisors are Library volunteers Martha Crenshaw and
Win Drake. They will be responsible for verifying, updating and /or
purging the approximately 24,800 patron cards. Also, cardholders will be
encouraged to call in and provide the information. Public service
announcements will be made and Ms. Lewis will comment about the Project in
her March 26 newspaper column.
Chairman Hagood gave the Friends of the Library report and provided
details of the April 17 book review reception at Holy Cross Church. Ms.
Lewis noted the Friends are staffing the Ramses II exhibit in the Library
Gallery.
Ms. Lewis advised there will be just two free public typewriters in
an effort to reduce costs, and the age restriction for their use was
dropped.
Regarding the four Jerry Bywaters murals which hang in the Library,
Ms. Lewis suggested a plaque be placed next to each one noting the
artist's name, his date of birth and death, the year the painting was
executed, and its title if there is one. Mrs. Alsobrook made a motion
stating same, Mrs. Gibbs seconded it and the motion carried.
The Director's Remark included the following:
Everyone is encouraged to attend the Ramses II exhibit sponsored by
the Paris Area Arts Alliance which will be in the Gallery through Sunday,
March 19.
The Library staff has begun parking near the street to allow
patrons easier access to the entrance.
4
The Library telephone will no longer be answered in the public
areas. Two staff members have been assigned this responsibliity which
will facilitate more professional communitations.
