Paris Public Library
Paris, Texas
June 29,, 1978 °
Mrs. Ann M. Clark
Rankin Public Library
Box 6
Rankin, Texas 79778.
Dear Mrs. Clark:
I am currently formulating a new fine policy for
Paris Public Library. Elizabeth Crabb of North
East Texas Library System has told me that your
library has a one —month amnesty for fineless book
return each year.
I would very much appreciate any comments you could
make on how this affects return of library-materials.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
John P. Hastings
Director of Library Services
Dear John,
My system is not unique - -it was stolen from Alpine Library. I have an
honor system - -a jar is on the desk, and donations are made on overdue books. We
are a town of slightly over 1000 people - -all on a first name basis - -so I don't
know whether this would work in a larger town or not. It has certainly cut down
on lost books and hard feelings between me and patrons, but I cannot tru §hfully
say that our fine income is the same - -it's about a third less. We 'circulate about
or
14 amdx15,000 per year, and are open aknut 30 hrs per week.
Ann M Clark
